Description

Aeonium haworthii - the pinwheel plant or Haworth's aeonium This is a tightly branched shrub-like succulent from the Canary Islands. This succulent has flatish rosette shapes at the end of often freely branching woody stems, in a color range of blue-green to grey-green, usually with red tones on the edges of the leaves and as the rosette matures, forms a full mounding shape. It’s quite unique and differs from other rosette-style succulents with its shrubby multi-branched growth.

Perfect as a standalone statement piece for dish gardens and mixed succulents, and a great little addition to a shallow bowl where lots of tiny little rosettes fill out well and look so texturous. Also just as happy in a decorated pot on a bright windowsill, or the protected half-shady balcony. Over the years they branch out and turn into much more of a bushy shrub so make for a long-lived, interesting specimen.

This Aeonium Haworthii doesn’t want full, blasting sun, however, it likes bright indirect sunlight and usually semi-dormant if it gets too hot. Some hours of direct light is okay. It's a winter growing plant so it'll be actively growing and happy in winter and early spring, and take a bit of a breather as temperatures heat up! Don’t let it dry out as much as most succulents and you will be rewarded with clusters of light yellow or white flowers come springtime.

Q: My Aeonium Haworthii is no longer growing at the peak of summer. Why?

A: This succulent is a winter-growing variety and it prefers cooler temperatures in which to grow. In summer’s heat it’s going to slow down, or enter semi-dormancy. This is normal behavior for your plant, so there’s no cause for alarm. Water less and your plant will soon grow back once cooler weather sets in.

Q: When do I water it?

A: During its growing season (Spring, Summer, Fall), water it about every 10-14 days and make sure you let the soil become mostly dry, but not fully dry. This guy likes a bit more moisture than a lot of other succulents while actively growing.

Q: Can Aeonium Haworthii be grown indoors?

A: Yes. It can be grown successfully indoors with plenty of indirect light – preferably in an east-facing window. Aeonium will not tolerate harsh direct sunlight well in summer.

A: It is a medium-growing plant, most active in cool weather, and will become shrubby and fuller, branching out over time with several rosettes forming.
