Syngonium Bronze – Arrowhead Plant
Description
Syngonium Bronze is another variation of the popular Arrowhead Plant. Grown for the beautiful bronzy hue running through its fine, net-like vein pattern. New leaves may initially unfurl with a coppery tinge and mature into a deeper bronze-green. This results in a far richer, subtler plant than most green Syngoniums are commonly encountered as. The leaf shape develops similarly to all other varieties of Syngonium; a simple arrow shape when young, becoming lobed with age.
The Syngonium Bronze is a variety of Syngonium podophyllum, which is responsible for most of the Arrowhead Plants sold as house plants and it belongs to the family Araceae along with Money Plant and Peace Lily. In its native habitat of Central and Sou
th America, Syngonium grows in the undergrowth of the forest floor where it can climb up the trunks of tree trunks as it gets older, which is the reason that given a support structure such as a moss pole, the plant can be grown climbing vertically inside. Without a support it is quite happy as a bushy, compact plant in a pot, or trailing from a basket.
Because of the colour, Syngonium Bronze is an ideal plant to provide some warmth on a plant shelf filled with various shades of green. This would be a particularly attractive plant in the living room, study corner, or on a balcony which receives indirect light as it will not thrive in bright direct sunshine. It can also do well in the kitchen or bathroom, if some light is available, as it benefits from higher humidity than the average arid room. Without adequate humidity, or with increased heating over winter, the leaf margins of Syngonium Bronze tend to go brown and brittle. Thus the plant needs to be kept away from direct heat sources and benefit from occasional misting.
Syngonium Bronze is one of the easier house plants for the slightly more experienced houseplant owner, in that its most significant requirement is watering balance, otherwise it demands very little attention. A pot with a drainage hole has been supplied to discourage root rot from over-watering. It could make an appropriate present for the houseplant enthusiast who is looking to introduce another color palette to their existing plant collection instead of another green one.

Important notes
- Plants are living and so there will always be minor variations in leaf color, pattern and size as against the photo.
- The bronze color can be more or less intense depending on the light level of your plant, as bright light usually results in a darker bronze.
- Plants may seem slightly stressed (eg a curled leaf or droopy leaf) when they first arrive but are generally happy after two weeks of being on the substrate.
- Immediately out of the box, avoid putting the plant in bright, harsh sun; introduce to brighter light slowly.
- Leaves and sap may be irritant if touched or eaten. Be sure to wash hands after handling, and maybe wear gloves for repotting and pruning.
- Kindly keep the plant out of the reach of children and pets because Syngonium is poisonous.
Frequently asked questions
Q: The bronze colour of my plant is becoming lighter and more greenish?
A: Bronze colour tends to appear brightest when the plant is grown in a brightly, indirectly lit situation. Long-term lack of light will result in plain green new leaves being produced. A move to a more well-lit location (but not direct sunlight!) will usually encourage bolder colour on new growth.
Q: How much watering is appropriate for the plant?
A: Most times, wait until the upper layer of dirt feels dry before giving it more moisture instead of following fixed days. Drainage holes in the container matter just as much. Sitting wet for too long bothers this plant deeply - roots start breaking down if ignored.
Q: Can I grow this plant inside all year round?
A: Yes, it is very popular houseplant and is perfectly suited to indoor conditions and grows very well at home throughout the whole year, It has a tendency for leaves to dry at the edges so it dislikes very dry conditions, i.e. From heaters etc, try and keep it away from them and also a/c vents if you can.
Q: What light levels does it require?
A: This plant will perform best in bright indirect light which will really highlight the bronze tones. Medium to low light will be tolerated, although the color may be less vibrant and growth slow.
Q: Why are the leaves different looking as the plant matures?
A: This is normal behavior for Syngonium. Immature leaves are usually simple arrow shaped, and with maturity, new leaves are frequently lobed or divided. This is completely normal, not a problem.
Q: Is this plant safe around pets and children?
A: Most animals avoid biting into syngonium because it stings the mouth. This happens due to tiny sharp particles inside the leaves. People react the same way when they chew on it. Young kids might not know better so keep the plant somewhere high up. Pets get uncomfortable too after tasting it. If someone swallows even a little piece, help comes from professionals - call their number fast.
