Description

Peperomia White Plant

Description

Peperomia White is the name given to the variegated version of Peperomia obtusifolia, which you might more familiar recognize by its other common name - Baby Rubber Plant. These plants have thick and somewhat rounded leaves with a glossy texture and are patterned with swathes of green and off white over every leaf. Because they are so varied no two leaves are the same, creating more of a hand painted and dynamic effect as opposed to one solid color plant.

The Peperomia White plant forms into a tidy, dense bush on upright stalks and it remains relatively compact. This ensures that it is perfectly suited to smaller spaces, tables, desks, shelves and windowsills. A member of the pepper family the leaves of this plant, as most pepper family members, are a little firm and fleshy, and this enables the plant to survive an occasional missed watering.

It is an ideal indoor plant choice for new owners, as Peperomia White does not require a complicated care regime and tolerates various interior light situations, although it displays most vibrantly under bright but indirect light. The Peperomia White will look lovely and happy in both the home and office environment on a desk, coffee table, or shelf, ideally somewhere receiving adequate daylight without the most intense direct rays for too many hours of the day.

The leaves of Peperomia White plant are varied and quite attractive, and because it is a reasonably small plant, it is one that is frequently given as a gift for someone who has moved into a new home, accepted a new job, or just generally likes having a little greenery indoors. As such this is a plant that does not need a huge amount of space and does not need a huge plant pot and so it is ideal for small apartments, or indeed larger houses.

Key features

  • Brightly variegated glossy leaves with a mixture of green and off white/cream
  • Compact & bushy so doesn't take up much space. Perfect for window sills, desks or as part of a plant shelf display.
  • The semi succulent nature of the leaves mean that if you happen to miss the odd watering it's forgiving.
  • Will cope in a variety of indoor lighting conditions although brighter indirect light is required to keep the variegation vibrant and healthy.
  • Relatively low maintenance once you've got a consistent watering routine established.
  • Desk, shelf, window sill, coffee table - where it won't go?
  • Perfect beginner friendly plant, tolerant to the occasional error.
  • Compact is such an easy gift to post to plant enthusiasts!

Care at a glance

Sunlight

Loves bright, indirect light that keeps the white and green markings crisp and sharp. Does tolerate lower light, but the marking won't be as bright, and it's a slower grower. Do not expose yourself to the bright afternoon sun.

Watering

Water only when the top inch of the soil is dry to the touch. This plant stores water within its fleshy leaves, and therefore, it is always advisable to err on the side of the plant being underwater rather than over-watered.

Temperature

Likes between 18C-24C, although this can vary to a greater degree with in door temperatures, not sensitive to sudden changes. Do not place near a cold draught.

Humidity

Moderate humidity is enough; it does not need frequent misting. Average room conditions in most Indian homes work fine.

Repotting

Usually needed once every 2 to 3 years, or when the plant has clearly outgrown its current pot.

Growth rate

Slow to moderate grower, depending on the light it receives.

Important notes

  • Being a live plant, the exact pattern, amount, and placement of white variegation will vary from leaf to leaf and from plant to plant, since no two leaves are identical.
  • Some leaf drop or slight wilting after delivery is common due to the stress of transit. The plant usually settles down within a week or two of normal care.
  • Don’t put this plant into bright direct sun immediately when you get it home, let it ease in slowly for a few days.
  • If this plant remains in low light for an extended period of time, the white variegation may decline or become a more solid green color in the leaves, in which case it is helpful to move to a slightly brighter area, that will encourage increased variegation in newer growth.
  • Make sure this plant’s pot has drainage and that water is not allowed to sit at the base, this plant does not like sitting in overly wet conditions.
  • Please use caution, as all houseplants are better out of the reach of children and pets.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Why are my plants' leaves turning yellow?

A: The yellowing of the leaves of your Peperomia White is very likely due to being overwatered and that your plant remains to stand in water, as the plant enjoys having it dry slightly between watering. See that your pot has good drainage and allow it to dry before watering your plant once more. Single yellowing of old leaves as it grows is usual as well.

Q: How often does this plant need watering?

A: Water thoroughly whenever the top inch of soil is dry to the touch- in most homes this is around once a week, but this can depend on your climate and season. Since it has some ability to retain water in its leaves, it’s better to under- water than to over-water.

Q: Can it be an indoor plant the whole year through?

A: Yes, it is primarily an indoor plant and can thrive with little effort near a bright window and on a shelf or desk where it gets light. No need to move it out doors.

Q: How much sun does it need?

A: It thrives in bright, indirect light – like situated a few feet away from a window. The light helps the white and green of its leaves remain sharp. While the Pilea is adaptable to lower light conditions, slower growth and white-fading may be evident with continued less ideal light exposure.

Q: How fast does this plant grow? When do i repot this plant?

A: This plant can be grown as slow to moderate growth depending on the amount of light available to the plant. Usually needs to be repotted only every 2-3 years, or whenever it clearly appears outgrowing the pot size and roots may have emerged from the surface.

Q: Do I have to fertilise it, and is it safe to have near pets?

A: If the weather is warmer and it’s in its growth period, you can apply a monthly dose of balanced liquid fertiliser – not essential for a young plant but can help. Peperomia obtusifolia and its variegations aren’t known to be toxic to dogs and cats, but it’s always best to remove plants to pet paws with a penchant for nibbling.
