🌿 Sempervivum (commonly called hens and chicks) is another popular, hardy succulent — often confused with Echeveria, but it’s a bit tougher and more cold-hardy.
Here’s an overview if you’re looking for Sempervivum with pot or planning to care for one:
🌿 About Sempervivum:
-
Shape: Low-growing rosettes, often forming dense clusters (the “hen” is the main rosette; the “chicks” are the offsets).
-
Colors: Green, reddish, burgundy, purple, sometimes even variegated depending on the variety and season.
-
Size: Rosettes usually 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) wide, but they multiply and spread.
🪴 Pot & Planting Needs:
-
Pot: Choose a terra cotta, ceramic, or any pot with drainage holes. These plants hate soggy roots.
-
Soil: Use well-draining cactus/succulent mix or sandy soil.
-
Arrangement: Looks beautiful in shallow bowls, small decorative pots, or even vertical planters.
☀️ Care Tips:
-
Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade; they like bright conditions, especially outdoors.
-
Watering: Very drought-tolerant — water deeply but only when soil is completely dry.
-
Cold-hardiness: Unlike Echeveria, Sempervivum can survive freezing winters outdoors in many zones. They go dormant but come back in spring.
-
Propagation: Offsets (“chicks”) can be separated and replanted easily.
