Description

Philodendron Pink Princess

(Blushing Philodendron — Philodendron erubescens 'Pink Princess')

Description

The Philodendron Pink Princess is a beautifully variegated vine belonging to the family Philodendron erubescens. It has dark black/deep green heart-shaped leaves which are characterized by unique splashes and variegation in the form of bright pink markings that can be varied across leaves, not to mention unique in pattern to the specific leaf. It is also related to the Pothos, a common houseplant, being part of the Araceae family and has a growth habit of climbing/trailing and has small pinkish-colored stems when new.

This plant is all about the flashy foliage; Philodendron Pink Princesses don't often flower indoors. That pink color on new growth is not due to a loss of chlorophyll so, the less light the less bright and pink it becomes. Place this guy in a medium light (but bright!) filtered environment - in front of an east facing window gets you a lot of soft, filtered morning sun.

It's understandable why so many collectors rave about the Philodendron Pink Princess: Its vibrant color looks great, styled alone on your desktop or shelf or mixed in with other greenery. It’s not the easiest houseplant, but it's not maintenance-free either; This is best for a plant enthusiast ready to monitor their plant’s water and light preferences.

Your Pink Princess Philodendron will be sent out as a young plant, either in a 3 inch pot or bare root. As it grows, the pink layers fill in as you get new leaves – so the pink intensifies over time! You can grow this plant on as a climber up a moss pole,or allow its tendrils to hang down from a shelf or plant hanger.

Key Features

  • Glossy heart-shaped foliage in dark green to black with an intense pink splash on every leaf.
  • No two leaves are ever the same, making for a truly striking plant.
  • Naturally a climbing or trailing plant and so best grown with a moss pole or in a hanging basket.
  • Reddy-pink, immature stems give that color accent that's impossible to resist.
  • Variegation is light dependent, so positioning of the plant can dramatically affect the colour.
  • An eye catching, collector pleasing plant. Moderate grower with good light conditions.
  • Suitable for experienced plant keepers wanting a bit of an extra bit of care.

  • 1 × Pot (Bare-rooted / Pot: Optional)

Important Notes

  • As each is a live plant, color and the amount of pink variegation varies and no two are the same.
  • New leaves might also not develop with as much pink.
  • As light or a plant’s condition will, the leaf coloration will develop.
  • Some degree of leaf droop and mild browning post delivery is expected as your new plant acclimates.
  • Direct full sun should be avoided for these plants; the pink portions lack the chlorophyll to protect them.
  • New leaves can be mostly green if there is not enough light, but they should turn more pink in bright indirect light.
  • All portions of this plant are toxic if chewed or eaten by pets and children because of calcium oxalate in the sap. Keep these out of harm's reach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why are the new leaves on my plant coming in green instead of pink?

A: Often this indicates the plant isn’t receiving adequate bright, indirect light. Because of the leaf sections lacking chlorophyll, these variegated areas need robust light to be maintained. Shifting it towards a bright, filtered light window generally fixes the issue for upcoming leaves.

Q: How much time does this plant require for watering?

A: This plant does not have an explicit schedule to be watered, instead, it prefers checking soil moisture before watering. This can happen by looking for soil moisture that is dry when the top one or two inch depth, with a plant that is quite sensitive to underwater moisture.

Q: Is this plant going to do well in a low light room?

A: It can survive and get by in medium light, but it will not keep its variegation very well there and it will grow very slowly. I keep mine by a bright window that gets filtered light or indirect light.

Q: How fast does the plant grow and how large does it get?

A: It has moderate growth in favorable circumstances, creating fresh leaves each pair weeks within the expanding interval. Indoor it rarely becomes bigger than several feet in size, especially if encouraged onto a plant support resembling a moss pole.

Q: When and how do you repot?

A: As a youngster, you want to repot it annually; once the plant grows and matures, repot it about every two years, or as soon as it outgrows its pot and the roots are pushing at the sides. You’ll want to use a chunky, well-draining potting mix and the same size pot-just one pot larger.

Q: Is this plant safe for my pets?

A: nope The sap in any and all philodendrons is toxic and will cause the pet/child a burning and tingling of their lips, tongue, esophagus, and intestines in an unpleasant way. So definitely keep these up and away from your pets/child.
