Description

Thuja occidentalis  (Eastern White Cedar / American Arborvitae)

Description

Arborvitae Thuja occidentalis EverGreen Conifer A plant of eastern North America and in the cypress family with foliage like that of the cypress tree. The foliage appears flattened, and the needles are arranged flat, being green above and yellowish-green underneath. The Arborvitae comes from Latin for "tree of life". Native Americans helped the French colonize to utilize both the leaves and the sap in order to treat scurvy and also rheumatism. The tree grows with a columnar or pyramidal shape and makes an excellent hedge, barrier screen or tall accent shrub or plant.

It can grow on any soil, so as long as it is not waterlogged. It performs the best in full sun, to partial sun, 4-6 hours of direct sunlight per day is ideal. In India it grows very well in hill stations, the cooler plains regions and in large pots on terraces, balconies, verandas.
It has a moderate to slow growth habit which keeps the plant compact and usually requires pruning on an infrequent basis.

3-inch healthy youth specimen now, ready for planting! This is doing well. Young Thuja are happy to root in moist and good light and drainage. They also put together a great planting to the front door, informal borders or to a balcony in a nice big pot. Does not die back at maturity to keep dense.

Key Features

  • Resinous, gently fragrant leaf - a garden or balcony addition to savor with your sense of smell

  • Easy to maintain in outdoor containers, on terraces and balconies as well as open garden areas.
  • Low-maintenance once established — does not require heavy feeding, frequent repotting, or elaborate care routines

Important Notes

  • Being living things, exact dimensions, shape and leafiness will vary slightly from photographs shown which is completely normal and not a reflection of our quality standards.
  • Leaf Browning and Drooping Some mild leaf yellowing or drooping may be apparent after transit. This stress response of a conifer is entirely normal and should quickly disappear after 1-2 weeks in a stable, brightly-lit situation.
  • Thuja occidentalis is naturally an outdoor/semi outdoor plant and while youngsters can stay at a sunny window indoors for some time it doesn’t suit long periods inside in dim areas.
  • Don’t plant them in areas that have pooling water, or poor drainage. Water-logged roots kill most of the Thuja plants; they often can kill a Thuja.
  • Your plant should also tolerate hot summer in Indian plains well if it gets some afternoon shade and will require little extra watering.
  • Do not immediately re-pot any plants, and not particularly on receiving. Try giving it at least 2 to 3 weeks to acclimate to its environment before changing pot sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can Thuja occidentalis be grown in a pot on a terrace or balcony?

A: Indeed, thuya or northern white cedar grows rather well in containers. You can begin by keeping the young 3 inch sized 3 inch pot you purchase as is and transplant it to larger pots (8-12 inches) as the plant matures. Be sure your container contains sufficient drainage holes and is located where there are 4-6 hours of sunshine per day. The northern white cedar plant will reach 6 feet and you’ll gain from the lovely green foliage of the northern white cedar plant for most of the year in the balcony or the terrace.

Q: My Thuja’s leaves are turning yellow or brown. What should I do?

A: Often the inner leaves or lower parts of a Thuja plant will turn yellow or brown – this is a normal process of old inner leaves falling off from time to time. If there are browning parts covering the whole plant it can be caused by too much water, a lack of drainage, or too much harsh afternoon sun in strong heat. Is your soil wet too long, if so – decrease watering and use an appropriate pot that drains. Brown tips on outer parts may show a lack of humidity or too much heat.

Q: How to water my plant?

A: That varies with seasons, pot size, and environment of placement. But as a general rule of thumb, check the soil. Whenever the topmost 1-2 inches of the soil dry out to touch, water your plant. In peak summer, it can be every 2-3 days. In winters or monsoons, you would water even less. Ensure there is always a free drain, avoid sitting water for a prolonged duration.

Q: Is Thuja occidentalis fast-growing? How high will it grow?

A: Thuja occidentalis growth habit is slow to moderate and can grow an average of 10-20 cm each year under optimum conditions. Mature trees in the native habitat can grow 15-20 metres high, however container grown in the garden in India grows significantly smaller – mostly 1-3m with good care in container size and soil condition. Light annual trimming will maintain desired height.

Q: When do I need to repot my plant?

A: Every time you can see the plant’s roots pushing through the bottom drainage holes, and also whenever the plant begins to appear extremely root-bound and stops growing so actively. Usually for 3inch starter plants you might need the first re-pot after about 6-12 months. Transplant into one size bigger pot, use the potting soil mix and do not disturb the root ball too much. Do the repotting during cooler seasons like the early or late spring / early autumn, considering the Indian climates.

Q: Do I need to feed Thuja occidentalis and how?

A: Feeding lightly is beneficial for keeping the plant in healthy growth. A good slow release fertiliser or a weak liquid fertiliser can be applied monthly through spring and early summer while active growing. Don't over-feed your plants because doing so causes salt build up on the soil, which may kill your plant roots. Feeding can be stopped altogether or reduced over winter when growth naturally slows.
