Syngonium Wendlandii Green Velvet – Net Pot
Description
Syngonium Wendlandii Green Velvet is a plant that many find interesting, primarily due to its foliage. The leaves have a dark green, almost velvety appearance which provides a softer visual effect, and runs right down the center of each leaf, with a creamy white stripe. This is a standout color from that of an everyday green plant sitting on a shelf, and it arrives in a net pot with small holes in its sides which allow for air and water to move easily through the roots.
The Syngonium Wendlandii also goes by the name Velvet Syngonium or Silver Goosefoot Plant, is an entirely different species to the common Arrowhead Plant (and not just a color variation), native to rainforest areas of Costa Rica and other parts of Central America. Naturally this Syngonium grows by clambering up trees and prefers to do the same indoors when provided with a small support to hold onto which will enable the plant to climb slowly, but will not affect its growth pattern drastically if this support isn't there and it grows bushy instead.
This Velvet Syngonium is quite a nice plant for a living room shelf or a desk or it will be quite happy to be placed near a window that receives filtered sunlight. It will also benefit from having a little humidity around it; therefore, a bathroom with some natural light or the window sill over a kitchen sink would also be suitable. Keep away from extremely hot and dry places like beside the radiator or a closed-up balcony with no shade at all because dry conditions may result in dry and crisp leaf tips. This plant also enjoys the help of a little humidity, such as placing the pot near some water for it.
It is not one of the more foolproof plants out there but not the most difficult either and the net pot is a great feature since it encourages excellent drainage and allows for the free circulation of air to the roots helping to prevent root rot. For an existing plant owner it's a good addition to their collection, offering them a different look for their shelves.

Important notes
- Plants each grow their own way, which means slight differences in leaf shape, hue, or markings compared to the picture won’t be unusual.
- Water might escape through the sides of the net pot, not only the base, because that is how this container works. Think about where you set it down before adding water, since spills could happen sideways. The design lets moisture find gaps along the edges, which changes how you handle hydration and placement.
- After moving, the plant might seem worn - maybe one leaf bends, another twists shut. Happens often. Most times, it bounces back in ten days or so.
- Start by keeping it away from harsh sunlight once you take it out. After opening, shift it toward more light bit by bit - over ten days or so.
- After handling the plant, rinse your hands - its sticky liquid may cause discomfort on skin or in eyes. When pruning or moving it to a new pot, wear gloves; that goo inside stems and leaves means business.
- Out of reach works best when little hands or paws might wander near. Chewed leaves bring trouble - this one was never made for tasting. A safe spot keeps curious nibbles from turning into problems.
Frequently asked questions
Q: What is a net pot and do I need to repot the plant immediately?
A: A net pot is plastic with small holes or gaps around all the sides of the pot, not just at the bottom. This will allow for air flow around the roots, and also will prevent the water from sitting around the roots too long. It is not necessary to repot the plant immediately. You can continue to keep it in the net pot inside a planter, or move the plant into a regular pot with a drainage hole at any time.
Q: Why are the leaf edges turning brown and crispy?
A: This is very usual due to a dry atmosphere, low humidity. The air feels thick and crispy for the leaves. That plant really enjoys air that is more thick and damp. This usually occurs near something producing heat, or near ventilation/aircon – move it and place a pan with water near it or even drip water onto the leaves.
Q: Water When Soil Is Dry?
A: Feel the soil near the surface. When it seems dry under your fingertip, that is time to pour water. Going without moisture for days isn’t good, yet puddles beneath the pot bring harm just the same. Each extreme pushes the roots into strain. Letting it dry a little between drinks works best.
Q: How much light does this plant need?
A: A spot near a sunny window works well, just not right in it - think slightly back or shaded by a curtain. Pale leaves might show up if there is not enough brightness, growth could slow too. Harsh sunlight straight on the plant? That burns the foliage.
Q: Will the leaves turn when the plant is growing older?
A: Yes, this is perfectly normal. The younger leaves seem to be more heart-shaped while as the plant is older, the leaves tend to be more long and arrow-shaped. Nothing is wrong with your plant.
Q: Can this plant be safely kept around my pets and children?
A: This Syngonium is not safe to be chewed or eaten and sap is irritating to skin, mouth, or eyes as with other Syngoniums. Display this plant out of the reach of pets and small children and call a doctor or vet if your pet or child consumes any of the plant.
