Schefflera Plant
Description
The Umbrella Plant is actually a Schefflera and it’s often referred to as this because its attractive, glossy leaflets are arranged in a fan shape emanating from a central stalk. The Schefflera arboricola (also known as the Dwarf Umbrella Tree), a member of the Araliaceae plant family, is an ever-present indoor plant. Its leaves have five to seven leaflets radiating from the stalk to a central point and this gives the plant a dense, attractive appearance, even as it’s small and young.
Many people turn to Schefflera for indoor plant collections as this is one type that holds its shape without the need for frequent pinching or training. With their bushy habit and upright structure, these plants work perfectly in corners that need a little height and organization, by a sofa, adjacent to stairs, next to an imposing window and because they thrive in pots, you will often see these in reception areas, houses and office buildings.
Schefflera has the sort of dappled light in most Indian living rooms and balconies with shade. It's tolerant of moving locations around at need, and the leaves always look glossy with regular dusting and water. If you're looking for something plant that looks a little fuller, that's not too fussy or demanding about being constantly repotted, then this Schefflera fits into any routine.

Important notes
- Individual leaf size and fullness of growth can differ slightly plant to plant as this is a live plant which naturally grew.
- Slight shedding after delivery of the product is to be expected due to transit, typically these plants adjust to a new home after 1-2 weeks.
- Do not keep this plant in strong direct sun or the glossy leaves will be burnt.
- The growth will be less during the winter months, as is typical of this plant.
- Dust will need to be wiped off of the leaves now and then, with a moist cloth.
- Keep plant out of the way of small children and pets as an animal precaution, in case it is eaten, due to the irritant sap.
Frequently asked questions
Q: The leaves of my schefflera are turning yellow-what gives?
A: It really comes down to either too much water, or an uneven watering schedule. You want to stay away from a water-logged environment, and ensure the first inch of the potting soil is given an opportunity to dry out before you water your schefflera.A little bit of yellow on older, bottom leaves are perfectly acceptable.
Q: What are my watering needs for this plant?
A: When the top inch of the soil is dry to touch, (roughly once every 7-10 days) adjustments to outdoor & indoor growing climate & to season need to occur.
Q: Can Schefflera live indoors year round?
A: Yes, the Schefflera is quite hearty, and can live in the home all year long with adequate bright indirect light. Be sure that your home has at least one room without a dark climate in which to grow your Schefflera, or it may become leggy.
Q: Will it tolerate full sun?
A: Not at all, full sun will burn its leaves most during summer mid-day. Plant it in full sun, avoiding direct mid and late afternoon sun, but slight afternoon shade is ok.
Q: How fast does it grow?
A: This is a moderate, to relatively fast-growing plant especially as the season progresses in late spring through to the late summer, but naturally tends to slow a little towards the winter.
Q: When should I re-pot and fertilise?
A: Re-pot if it fills it’s pot or roots start growing through drainage holes - Approximately 18-24 months. Fertilise on monthly basis from early spring until the end of summer using diluted liquid fertiliser, unless recently re-potted.
