Description
Sansevieria Silver Steel (Dracaena trifasciata cv. 'Silver Steel' | Snake Plant | Silver Snake Plant)
Description
This is a form of the familiar Snake Plant, now known by the scientific name, Dracaena trifasciata. This particular variety stands out from other Snake Plants due to its striking foliage which is predominantly a cool metallic silver-grey with some pale green cross-banding. Its strong upright and rigid leaves help to give the Sansevieria Silver Steel a very clean modern appearance. The colour is the aspect that is noticed by almost everyone on their first glimpse of this plant.
Originating from Western Africa from which the largest of the Sansevieria species have migrated – the Snake Plant seems to have made herself quite at home for growing in India. This plant seems to thrive in anything as it tolerates low levels of light, being watered erratically, the dry indoor air and fluctuating levels of heat, making the Snake plant incredibly resilient in an Indian climate. It stands its ground even when many other plants either turn limp, shapeless or when their colors start fading. Really a tenacious one at that too for any household, office or apartment in India.
The Silver Steel Sansevieria is ideal as an independent floor planting, for larger tables while still a sapling, and the developed plant will serve as excellent as the large specimen for home floors – bedrooms, living room, home office, lounge area, corridors, reception. This is not the kind of demanding plant that makes noise. This is a good solution for those who need not just any leaf, but a completely guaranteed result with minimal effort.
Key Features
- Unique metallic silver-green plant leaves with very pale cross bars to add some intrigue into the usual greenery of the Snake plant family.
- Leaves arranged vertically and upright, producing tidy formation, no trimming, stakes or supports required.
- Better at taking low light than the average houseplant, also suitable to put in a room where you do not get much sunlight
- Holds water in its leaves, it can miss waterings and will still not wilt or change shape.
- Great for dry indoors- doesn't require misting or humidifier in conditions of a normal Indian house
- Plants take time to develop, which ensures that they will be a manageable size for many years to come
- Lush and low-maintenance perennial that thrives on neglect – perfect for beginners & busy folks.
- Individual as a solitary specimen plant or in large groups of varied foliage planting.

Important Notes
- The major killer is over-watering: The Snake Plant, sansevieria, holds water in the roots and leaves so too much watering leads to rot – the most common way the Snake Plant kills itself! Water only when the soil completely dries out.
- Varied natural colours: the shades of grey-silver and cross-marking differ from plant to plant to some extent. Even individual leaves of one plant may show some variation – this is common with this variety.
- Transit stress: You’ll notice some loose soil or maybe one plant which wobbles a bit after transit. Situate the plant somewhere with stable, diffused light and don’t water for the first three to four days - the plant will bounce back.
- Toxicity: Sansevieria (Dracaena trifasciata) is mildly toxic when consumed by dogs, cats, and humans. Ensure that you place it beyond the reach of young kids and pets.
- Frost tolerant: This plant can adapt to several temperature ranges, yet frost and a chill below 10 ° C is harmful. The plant can be taken indoors overnight during winters and hilly regions with a cold climate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What type of light does Sansevieria Silver Steel want?
A: This plant is tolerant of many light levels - from dimly lit corners to spots of bright indirect light next to windows. In moderate to bright indirect light, growth is faster and coloration is most striking, however the Silver Steel is content even in less brilliant situations as long as it’s out of reach of excessive drafts. Full, intense afternoon sunlight filtered through glass windows will scorch its edges; keep it clear.
Q:How often to water this plant?
A:Water thoroughly only when you confirm that the soil has completely dried up throughout the depth of the pot. During an Indian summer, it’ll take approx 10-14 days for this, but during winter or less intense light conditions it may take 3-4 weeks. When watering heavily and ensure all excess water is drained away. Always remove from the saucer once it's done dripping, the soil must not stand in water.
Q: Can I place a Sansevieria Silver Steel in my bedroom?
A: Yes, the Snake Plant Silver Steel is a very bedroom-friendly houseplant – it is silent and will be small if you get it as a sapling and won’t require constant attention. There are some popular myths that Snake Plants produce oxygen during the day – in reality it doesn’t amount to much more than your other indoor plants.
Q: Why are the leaf tips turning brown?
A: Usually, you'll find that the problem can be one of the following; inconsistent watering (too much or too little), an extremely dry atmosphere for an extended time or physical injury through transportation or handling. First consider your watering technique; if the soil is staying waterlogged for a long time, reduce your watering frequency; if it’s constantly dry then water it a little more regularly. Physical tip injury doesn’t spread to the rest of the leaf and if you find the appearance of damaged tips annoying, you can cleanly snip them away with scissors.
Q: When should the Silver Steel sapling be repotted?
A: Repot the sapling once roots have reached the drainage hole, and are beginning to pop out of the topsoil, or when the Sansevieria obviously outgrows its pot. This type of plant tolerates, even prefers a tight-fitting pot, therefore it’s not advisable to immediately upsize to an enormous vessel. Transition one size larger; from 3” to 5 or 6”, and use a well-draining, gritty medium. In the majority of cases, it’s unnecessary to repot this sapling more than once every two years.
