Description

Sansevieria Bacularis Mikado Sapling (Dracaena bacularis cv. 'Mikado'  |  Mikado Snake Plant  |  Cylindrical Snake Plant)

Product Description

The Sansevieria Bacularis Mikado is a small, sculptural specimen which offers thin, round, tube-shaped leaves upwards in a neat bunch. Unlike the traditional Snake plant, the Sansevieria bacularis mikado has rounded leaves that taper to a sharp, hollow end which will each remain stubbornly straight and erect without any droop. Even with the move under dracaena, this plant shares all of the hardiness the family is famous for and the mikado cultivar is chosen for its tight, dense structure giving this small plant an architectural silhouette.

Coming from tropical East Africa, the Mikado grows wild in arid and stony places and is therefore ideally suited for us. For many, it will replace a plant that is in a place of living and business environments where other plants wilt the most due to dryness and heat, as well as due to lack of light and irregular watering. Mikado keeps its color and shape without demanding daily care on the desk, a shelf, windowsill or corner on the floor, and is even striking with its unusual tubular leaves in modern and minimalist living rooms.

This will still grow with that same typical tall, needlelike form and already demonstrates what the plant will finally look like. It doesn’t really change much since it is an exceptionally slow growing specimen plant and as such is ideal for tidy arrangements that won’t be outgrown for some time. It is really a very easy first plant choice for the newbie, practically indestructible from the ‘average’ gardener simply not paying enough attention.

Key Features

  • The plant’s round, stiff, needle-like leaves stand perfectly upright to form a thick fan, completely unlike flat-leaved varieties of Snake Plants.
  • Resistant to extreme drought - contains water in leaves and tolerates watering at intervals
  • Works in low light as it is not at all fussy in a dry indoor surrounding so no misting or humidity needed.
  • Compact growth habits remain up to date with minimum effort without any pruning, staking or added support systems.
  • Slow growth rate implies that the plant maintains size and shape for several years as it will not outgrow its designated space.
  • Ideal for contemporary minimalist & office interiors requiring a crisp architectural planting style
  • Works on average indoor Indian temperatures for all seasons - tolerates heat and is cold-draft proof
  • Good for beginner, novice, as well as experts - effortless input, consistent output

Care at a Glance

Sunlight

Bright indirect light gives the best growth. Tolerates low light well. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sun which can bleach the leaves.

Watering

Water only when the soil is fully dry — every 12 to 20 days in summer, even less in winter. Overwatering causes root rot.

Temperature

15°C to 38°C. Tolerates Indian heat very well. Protect from frost and cold drafts below 10°C.

Humidity

Tolerates very low humidity. No misting required. Dry indoor air suits this plant naturally.

Repotting

Repot every 2 to 3 years or when pups and roots visibly crowd the pot. Prefers a firm, snug fit.

Growth Rate

Slow. Produces new cylindrical shoots (pups) gradually from the base over time.

Important Notes

  • Do not overwater: Mikado’s top care priority- its leaves can carry and store water so its roots will sit in a soggy environment if you’re overwatering, something it tolerates very poorly. Water only if the entire pot is completely bone dry. Wait another 2 or 3 days if you are uncertain.
  • Brown leaf tips – The cylindrical leaves end with a soft, slightly pointed tip. Natural and not harmful, occasionally the tips brown. This will generally be a result of an extremely dry environment long-term, transit damage or contact.
  • Natural variation: Number of shoots, the exact height and spacing of cylindrical leaf will vary between one plant to another. This is considered natural variation, not a defect.
  • During Transit: Plants may arrive with slight disruption to the soil and could seem compacted due to packing. Let them settle in an indirect location light for a couple of days then back to routine watering
  • Toxicity: The Dracaena bacularis plant is considered mildly toxic if consumed by humans, pets such as cats or dogs and must therefore be placed out of their access.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What makes Sansevieria Bacularis Mikado different from a regular Snake Plant?

A: That's mostly a leaf issue. While your common snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata) sends up flat, broad sword like blades, the Mikado version has a bunch of very slim, pencil thin cylinders which have a strong upright architectural form. Mikado Sansevieria can look really great and also be grown exactly the same as the other snake plants they may be somewhat distantly related to, though.

Q: How much do I water the Mikado sapling?

A: Only when it's entirely out of water, like 2-3 inches down into the pot. Summer could be once in between 12-20 days depending on humidity and how big the pot is. If you don't have high heat and bright light the farther apart you could push watering is. The leaves are fleshy little cylinders, so the Mikado really takes care of itself. This is often the hardest part for people.

Q: Is it okay for my plant to sit in a room with absolutely no sun?

A: They are pretty tolerant of less sun than average, your plant can technically live in a room where only ambient light creeps in, although it might not grow as fast and its new shoots won’t be as compact and full. The most ideal spot we prefer them in is one with direct indirect light for a short while on occasion, such as beside a window that is never directly lit.

Q: Are pups produced on the plant?

A: Yes the Mikado produces small new cylinder shaped pups from its base as the plant ages and you will notice the pups emerging from the soil at the base, filling out the fans shape as time goes by - it is a slow process. You may like to leave the pups to grow with the mother plant and you may choose to remove and pot on the pups when they are a few centimetres in height.

Q: What kind of pot and soil is best for the Mikado?

A: Plant it in a pot that’s got a hole at the bottom at least - and Mikados, which loathe being over-watered, can stand for absolutely nothing more. Terracotta is the way forward to ensure quick drying; you’ll do best by combining 50/50 basic compost with something gritty like coarse sand or perlite.
