Description
Description
Sansevieria trifasciata 'Golden Hahnii' (Snake Plant)
Description
Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Golden Hahnii’ This is a diminutive variant of the common snake plant that also bears the common nickname, ‘Golden Bird’s Nest Snake Plant.’ Unlike the classic tall and stately upright snake plants that we are most familiar with, this dwarf variety stays quite small and develops into a close, compact rosette shape of leaves which have led to it being described as having a ‘nest-like’ form. They are composed of thick and succulent leaves that gracefully curve inwards, and display bright and definite gold yellow borders that give way to a deeper green interior to provide a striking two-toned effect.
Golden Hahnii retains all of the dependable durability and ease of care that you expect from such a popular house plant genus but at a fraction of the size. It rarely exceeds a height of 6-8 inches which makes it an ideal candidate for places on tables, desks, counter tops and shallow shelves where a larger plant would simply not be an option.
As expected from the snake plant group, Golden Hahnii plants are remarkably uncomplaining and tolerant of neglect, making them an excellent first plant for a novice gardener or for anyone who travels frequently and has trouble with their plant care regimen being as disciplined as is recommended for most other indoor varieties. It thrives in a variety of indoor lighting conditions, from bright indirect light near a window, to further away. Best gold colouring is achieved when given plenty of indirect light.
Thanks to its compact size and showy colours, Golden Hahnii makes a superb display on a work desk, study table, shelf in a bedroom or a windowsill. It is a much sought after desk and house warming gift as it looks attractive with no further preparation and needs minimal attention to stay looking attractive.

Care at a glance
|
Sunlight |
Light Light best for this is bright, indirect light, but can adapt to medium and low light (though with a little less of that gold colour). Do not put in direct sun light in afternoon, this can scorch. |
|
Watering |
Water only when soil has dried out. This succulent holds its water in fleshy leaves and is more prone to death from overwatering than underwatering, so err on the side of caution when watering. |
|
Temperature |
Happy from 16C-30C. Place it in a position where it will not catch any cold draughts, and ensure it will not get any lower than approx. 10C. |
|
Humidity |
Normal household humidity is enough. Avoid misting the leaves often, since standing moisture on the foliage can lead to spotting. |
|
Repotting |
Not needed often, since it is a slow grower. Once every 2 to 3 years, or when offsets fill up the pot, is generally enough. |
|
Growth rate |
Slow grower that holds its compact shape with very little change year to year. |

Important notes
- Being a live plant, slight differences in leaf size, the exact width of the golden margin, and overall rosette shape are natural and not a defect.
- It is not unusual to see some mild leaf scarring or marking appearing on snake plant leaves. It can occur naturally and it would not be detrimental to the health of the plant.
- Keep the plant away from heavy, direct sunlight immediately after unpacking. Over the course of a few days the plant will adapt to your home environment.
- The origin of most problems with this plant is overwatering. Always ensure that the soil dries completely between watering, and that the pot is free draining.
- A healthy plant only grows in small degrees- don’t expect to see any large growth spurts in just a week or two – changes in size over the course of months are typical for this variety of plant.
- Both sap and leaves are moderately toxic when chewed or ingested, so keep this plant inaccessible to small children and pets.
Frequently asked questions
Q. Why are my plant leaves going soft and mushy?
A. Soft and mushy or discoloured leaves usually indicate that you have watered too much as it dislikes wet soil so dry the soil out thoroughly before re-watering and make sure that the plant's pot drains adequately. If your plant's stem base has turned soft and squishy, cut off the very softest part and leave the wound to dry out before re-watering.
Q: How often do I water this plant?
A: Water thoroughly when the soil has completely dried, this in an average house is about once every 2-3 weeks depending on your house and climate. In other words, I am guilty of watering less than too often as this plant has a tendency to hold water well in the leaves.
Q: Can this plant be kept inside year-round?
A: Definitely, most of it can stay all year inside a regular room temperature, you can plant in a desk, a shelf or a window sill, there is no necessity to move them outside.
Q: What kind of sunlight do I need?
A: The plants enjoy bright, indirect light that will help to show off the colour on the leaf margins. Low to medium light will also work but the plant’s colours might look dull and it’ll grow slower still.
Q: How fast is this plant and how often do I repot it?
A: this plant grows very slow and new changes to this plant size occur slow as over a long period of time, one repot every 2-3 years is usually sufficient or any time that you notice new pups growing into your plant and filling it, causing the plant size to be too big in the pot to make room for a second offset.
Q: Will I have to fertilise it and is this plant safe around pets?
A general purpose or cactus fertiliser diluted to about quarter strength once a month over the main growing season would be ample as the plant is not a heavy feeder. This plant is mildly toxic if ingested by either animals or small children and so is perhaps best kept away from where there is free access.
