Sansevieria Hahnii Dwarf (Snake Plant, Dracaena trifasciata 'Hahnii')
Description
Sansevieria Hahnii Dwarf which we commonly know as Birds nest plant has earned its name from the arrangement in a rosette form and hence resemble a nest in birds from distance. However you will still find Indian plant vendors referring to this variety as “Birds nest plant”. The actual name of this plant is DRACAENA TRIFASCIATA “HAHNII”, however people will identify this variety of bird's nest plant from its name”birds nest plant”.
This Sansevieria Hahnii Dwarf is dispatched bare-root, no soil or pot are included. The roots look all healthy and nice. Bare root sending makes it so the transit stresses are less for the plant and we eliminate soil-borne issues that can happen during transit. Once it arrived, pot in a fast-draining succulent mix or gritty/sandy soil and water sparingly just to moisten the soil. Within one to two weeks of transit, the plant has acclimatized to your location and started new growth again.
The Sansevieria Hahnii Dwarf plant will thrive in any house or flat. Due to its small nature, it is perfect on a desk, shelf or the side in a bathroom and is also suitable for small spaces and flats. It also grows relatively well in shaded areas which is one of the reasons it’s so popular in flats and homes where natural light may not be abundant. It’s considered by many to be one of the most stress-free plants as it copes well with neglect, watering errors and dry conditions than many other common indoor plants.

- Once it is potted and situated it needs a bright position with a light water. Don’t heavy water the first week – allow plant time to settle as much as possible and recover any small root trauma from shipping.
- Leaf tip browning can sometimes occur while the plants are in transit and will not harm the overall health of the plants as leaves will continue to grow.
- More than anything else, it’s easy to kill your Sansevieria Hahnii through over-watering! Always be sure to keep roots dry and never water log your Sansevieria Hahnii.
- Sansevieria plant is poison when ingested, both for the dog and the cat so please keep out of reach of the animals.
- Each plant will be unique in its number of leaves, rosette size, and banding. These are natural variations common in how this plant produces offsets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How much light do Sansevieria Hahnii Dwarf need?
A: This plant, generally speaking, holds up under conditions of light better than other houseplants-it doesn't mean to live a life under total darkness, however! A Sansevieria Hahnii Dwarf will survive in minimal light, however it might go into a slow growth spurt (or stagnation, depending on what you think) with weak growth and an absence of clear banding on the leaves. Give your Hahnii Dwarf indirect light from an eastern-facing (and northern-facing window), several hours out of a day. Strong, midday summer sunlight can easily burn the leaves-keep them clear of that!
Q: How often should I water Sansevieria Hahnii Dwarf?
A: As seldomly as most other houseplants! A once every 2-3 weeks should suffice in summer, while you might be able to get away with watering it once every 4 weeks or more in winter or in the cooler periods inside the home. An easy method is to plunge your finger about 3cm (1 inch) deep into the soil. If you still feel even a hint of moisture, don’t water the plant just yet. This plant holds water in its thick, FLESHY leaves and its roots and tolerates dryness way better than sogginess.
Q: Is the Sansevieria Hahnii Dwarf always going to be small?
A: No it’s just not going to be tall like other varieties of snake plant. The Hahnii Dwarf’s height usually tops out at about 15 to 20cm while fanning outward in a round shape. With time it also sends out babies near the bottom that fill in the container and you can eventually divide those babies off when you repot it.
Q: Can a Sansevieria Hahnii Dwarf be an air purifier?
A: Sansevieria (Snake Plants), including Sansevieria Hahnii, are in the NASA 1989 Clean Air Study. There it was reported they absorb indoor air pollution (under certain controlled circumstances). Let’s be reasonable though, the air quality impact of just one small plant in a typical room will be minuscule. It’s still a beautiful and beneficial addition to your house, just don’t imagine it will clean the air considerably with just that one pot.
Q: Is Sansevieria Hahnii Dwarf okay for an air conditioned room?
A: YES – more so than other tropical plants! Just be mindful of a couple of things in an AC room. Firstly, soil dries slower in a cool low-humidity place so water even less than your standard schedule. Also, do not place it in direct line with the AC stream, as continuous cold drafts will stress the plant. Just about any position with decent ambient light near it will be fine.
