Description
Philodendron Xanadu Green ( Thaumatophyllum xanadu )
Description
Philodendron Xanadu Green ( botanically speaking, although often still sold as Thaumatophyllum xanadu) is a self-heading, clumping houseplant, with showy, deeply-lobed glossy green leaves which add to its sculpted look. Unlike its vining Philodendron relatives this one grows outward in a neat, tight clump and requires no staking. The leaves of this species are more deeply lobed and have a softer, more feathery look than the more round-leafed members of the genus. From Brazil this is the tropical leaf plant of choice for a dramatic structural look indoors or out in warmer regions.
A favourite choice for indoor gardens and office plants across India, the Xanadu is renowned for its willingness to tolerate various light levels. It is happy growing in bright indirect light, does fine in average office light levels, and will happily endure low light conditions for reasonable amounts of time although plant growth can slow. Deep green, heavily lobed leaves provide year-round interest and thisPhilodendronalso grows laterally rather than vertically, so one plant gradually develops into a large, impressive, bushy clump filling your available space.
This young and compact Philodendron Xanadu Green fits right onto a desk, sill or table whilst establishing. Once it is more established you could repot into a bigger home and allow it to spread. Perfect for living rooms, bedrooms, office desks and shaded balconies, its orderly and ornamental growth habit will always look neat andtidy no matter how little care from your side.

Important Notes
- The number, shape of lobes and size of each Philodendron Xanadu Green plant may differ due to plants' individuality and the age/size of the plants when dispatched.
- Your plant’s newer leaves may appear rolled or not quite open. Don’t force them – they’ll slowly open on their own as they acclimate to your space in a day or two.
- Occasionally, a few old leaves might turn yellow or fall off when moved. It's just the plant's reaction to change and a very short-lived event, growth usually comes back once it's in its new spot.
- The plant’s calcium oxalate crystals are toxic to people and any animals including dogs and cats. Make sure your children and pet cannot access this plant.
- Indian summer's bright sun will eventually bake and fade Xanadu’s smooth leaves; always placed in diffused light. It will eventually grow and spread horizontally over time.
- And it will be worth taking the position into account, there must be space around its side of the plant and to spread itself out.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What makes a Philodendron Xanadu Green different from other philodendrons?
A: Xanadu philodendron is what we call a “self-heading” variety – instead of vining and clambering like Philodendron erubescens or trailing, its leaves are deep and deeply-cut along its edges, creating a feathery and angular, unique, shaped leaf outline that differs greatly from smooth, heart-shaped leaves on vining philodendrons. Also, Xanadu philodendrons don’t require a pole and remain considerably smaller indoor plants by growth habit, widening out rather than growing up into tall structures.
Q: Why are leaves turning yellow on my Philodendron Xanadu Green?
A: Some yellowing leaves from time to time, usually on the older outer leaves, is perfectly normal as the plant renews its growth and shed the old foliage. If a lot of leaves turn yellow though overwatering is almost always the culprit! Have a check and feel if the soil is damp or soggy then reduce watering and ensure the pot has a good drainage hole. Other causes of yellowing leaves include too little light and dramatic changes to growing conditions however these are rarer!
Q: Space required for Philodendron Xanadu Green.
A: As a young plant (3”) this will be at home on your desktop or on a windowsill. Over time one Xanadu plant can spread to 60-90cm across and to the same height, but the inside Xanadu will be more restrained. Plant in an adequate amount of space to grow and to spread sideways, they are really at their best with room around them – don’t pack against walls or objects. The plant will need re-potting into a container 5cm-7cm larger than its previous home as outgrowing.
Q: Is it ok to put my Philodendron Xanadu Green on a shady balcony?
A: A partially shady or shady balcony location works for it ideally – particularly in India, where afternoon sun can be extremely scorching and harsh, but the morning rays of the sun, or daylight filtering through are fine too for the xanadu plant. On a bright and airy sheltered balcony or patio outdoors the Xanadu typically grows very fast with really big lobed leaves. Good drainage is crucial wherever it grows whether indoor or outdoor to prevent over-saturation in heavy rain.
Q: How often do I need to fertilize Philodendron Xanadu Green?
A: During the active growing period - typically March to September in India - feed a good-quality liquid house plant food at half-strength every 3–4 weeks to stimulate new growth and promote lush, healthy leaves. Don’t feed in the winter; it is a time of rest for the plant. Do not over-fertilize the plant as this may result in brown tips on the leaves or the gradual accumulation of salts in the soil. To avoid this, simply water through the plant to wash out the excess.
Q: My Philodendron Xanadu Green leaves are looking dull or dusty. How should I clean them?
A: Dust down each leaf with a clean, damp cloth to ensure there’s no excess dirt and debris that are impeding photosynthesis! This should be done once a couple of weeks to remove dust from the leaves, allowing more light to reach them, and therefore making them less prone to dusty and dingy appearances. Don’t use any oils or leaf-shine products, and especially avoid cleaning the leaves with any chemicals, as these are detrimental and can block the pores of the leaves!
