Petra Croton Sapling (Codiaeum variegatum 'Petra')
Description
The Petra Croton is one of the most striking foliage houseplants you can add to your collection. This comes to us with big, glossy, leathery leaves with a brilliant yellow, orange and red splashed within the leaves and along the edges, set in deep green. The Codiaeum variegatum is most known for consistently holding its strong colours throughout the seasons of all types, therefore a favorite among avid plant collectors. Also commonly known as a Joseph's Coat, and Garden Croton.
The colors of Petra Croton Sapling are sure to only bloom and continue to enhance and change as it adjusts. Like other crotons, all of their development goes into the brilliant foliage – not so much a bloomer indoors, this will shine in foliage alone.
Your Petra Croton need a light location – either a windowsill or a work desk that’s in a brighter position, or perhaps a sunny balcony. This plant demands a great deal of light, or otherwise its foliage starts to fade in to a rather dreary green colour. Make sure you give consistent water and a solid light exposure and this plant will provide a visual treat all year long!
Best for someone with some plant care experience, not totally new. If you have a room with light and want something a little outside your standard, green leaf variety, this Petra Croton is hard to beat for a bit of visual wow and character.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why are some of the leaves on my Petra Croton yellow and falling off?
A: It’s normal for a few old, bottom leaves of a Croton to yellow and eventually drop. It occurs during natural growth.Multiple leaves changing color at once likely indicates too much or too little water and/or a jump in light or temperatures after delivery.Verify that the plant’s pot has good drainage and do not water it until the top inch of the soil is dry to the touch.
Q: How often should I be watering my Petra Croton?
A: There is no set watering routine because the frequency relies on your home’s climate conditions. Instead, test the soil to see if the top inch has dried before watering again. In winter, reduce the amount or frequency as it grows a lot slower.
Q: Can I grow a Petra Croton plant indoors year round?
A: Yes you can, provided it receives some hours of bright, indirect light every day. An area next to an east or west facing window often proves the ideal spot for a Petra. If your indoor location has insufficient light you will find your leaves will eventually fade towards the colour green.
Q: How much sunlight does this plant actually need?
A: It needs roughly four to six hours of bright light a day to maintain strong leaf colour. Some gentle direct morning sun is tolerated and can even enhance colouring, but prolonged harsh afternoon sun can scorch the leaves, so a filtered or partially shaded direct-sun spot is ideal.
Q:How fast is the Petra Croton growing, and how soon can I expect to repot my plants.
A: Under proper care, and with good light, they can be a medium to fairly fast growers. You can plan on repotting your plants when they are showing signs of roots coming out the drainage hole,or the pot seems to be too tight with roots( usually in the 1 year time frame, when the plant is young sapling).
Q:Is it safe for my pets to be around?
A: No. The Petra croton is listed as mildly toxic if bitten or ingested and its sap may burn the skin when it touches it. You will want to try to keep away from the children and pets and wear gloves when pruning and repotting this plant .
