Opuntia monacantha, commonly known as Drooping Prickly Pear or Cochineal Prickly Pear, is a succulent shrub native to South America, particularly Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. This plant can grow up to 5 meters tall and features a trunk that branches at the top, with drooping cladodes (leaf-like stems) that are green and shiny. It produces bright yellow flowers with reddish markings and fleshy, red fruits that are edible. Opuntia monacantha thrives in well-draining soil and prefers full sun. While it has ornamental uses, it can be invasive in some regions due to its ability to reproduce through stem fragments and seeds.
