Monstera Adansonii “Broken Heart” Plant
Description
The Monstera Adansonii, commonly called the Broken Heart Plant, is a beautiful tropical houseplant known for its naturally perforated leaves that look like tiny heart-shaped cut-outs. This unique leaf pattern gives the plant its charming “broken heart” appearance and makes it a favorite for modern homes, offices, and plant lovers who want something a little different.
Native to the rainforests of Central and South America, this plant grows as a trailing or climbing vine and looks stunning when placed on shelves, hanging planters, or allowed to climb a moss pole. Its soft green, glossy leaves add a fresh, lively touch to any space without being overpowering.
Monstera Adansonii is not only attractive but also easy to care for. It adapts well to indoor conditions, prefers bright indirect light, and only needs moderate watering. This makes it ideal for both beginners and experienced plant owners. Over time, the plant grows fuller and more decorative, creating a natural green statement in your home.
Whether you're styling a cozy corner, decorating a workspace, or gifting a plant to someone special, the Broken Heart Plant is a thoughtful choice that blends beauty, simplicity, and tropical charm.

Care at a glance
Sunlight
Bright, indirect light. Place a few feet from a window, rather than directly in the glass. Direct, strong afternoon sun can burn the leaves.
Watering
Water if the soil around the surface feels dry to the touch, normally about once a week. Let it go on to reduce watering in the winter months. Don’t allow the pot to sit in standing water.
Temperature
Thrives in the range of 18-30 degrees Celsius. It’s imperative to keep it at bay from direct cool winds, a harsh AC, and frosty balconies during winter.
Humidity
Enjoys a range of humidity levels from average household up to high levels. May appreciate being misted in times of severe dry weather.
Repotting
The process should typically be carried out between one or two years and/or as soon as you observe that the plant’s roots are coming out of the bottom drainage hole.
Growth rate
Spring/summer – grows at moderate pace in the heat but slows down when cooler.

Important notes
- Being a live plant, slight differences in leaf size, leaf colour, and vine length are natural and not a defect.
- Some leaf drop or slight wilting after delivery is common due to the stress of transit. The plant usually settles down within a week or two of normal care.
- Once you take your new plant out of the packaging you’ll want to keep it out of full sun at first. You’ll want to give your new plant a few days to help get accustomed to the light it will receive indoors.
- The rate of growth will usually decrease during winter. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this, it is simply the natural seasonal trend for all plants.
- Always use a pot that is well drained and that the plant sits on, do not keep the plant sitting in water filled to the saucer level for more than a day or two.
- Keep out of the reach of small pets and children, not intended for consumption.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Why are the leaves of my plant yellow?
A: In most cases yellow leaves are caused by a plant getting too much water. Usually they’ve been allowed to sit in a pan of water or don’t have a well-draining pot. Make sure it’s not setting in a pan and allow the top of the soil to dry out for a day or so before watering again. If it’s an older lower leaf that’s going yellow it’s perfectly normal for your plant to have a couple of leaves do that when it gets larger.
Q: Water only when soil feels dry?
A: Most households manage just fine with weekly watering, though local weather and room settings can shift that timing. Stick your fingertip into the soil surface - that tells you what you need. Dryness means adding water now. When there's still a hint of dampness, hold off another day or so.
Q: Will this plant grow indoors year round?
A: Yes. This is Primarily an indoor plant. It requires fairly bright, indirect light in a window, as well as standard room temperature. It should never be moved outside.
Q: How much light does it want?
A: A bright room but nothing direct - I usually prefer just off a south-facing window, or even a few feet from an east or west facing window, for a bright indirect. If there is too much light it tends to lose “windows” and doesn’t grow so tall, but too much light and it will sunburn the leaves.
Q: How quickly does the plant grow, and when do I need to repot it?
A: They grow moderately, especially in warmer months. I would say to repot it in about once every one to two years or if I notice that it has roots growing out the bottom of the drainage hole, or if the plant seems very root bound and it seems small compared to its pot.
Q: Do I need to feed it fertiliser? Is it toxic for pets?
A: Yes, a liquid fertiliser, one part balanced and two parts liquid added to your plant's watering routine on a monthly basis in the summer and spring should encourage growth. This is not necessary for a young plant though. Monstera adansonii has toxic qualities if any of your pets, including cats, dogs or young children chew it or swallow it so keep it up high where it cannot be got.
