Kalanchoe Marnieriana (Marnier's Kalanchoe)
Description
Marnier's Kalanchoe - This unique branching succulent from Madagascar is easily identified by its stacked, flat, circular, blue-green leaves which arise from slender upright stems in opposition. They have a slightly waxy natural coating, lending a soft matte effect and when provided with ample light will develop an attractive coral/pink margin to really enhance its character. While many succulents grow as tight rosettes this one branches in an upright manner creating an entirely different shape for your collection.
Kalanchoe Marnieriana will thrive as an accent plant in mixed succulent plantings, reaching upwards with upright stems and stack like leaves above smaller rosette type plants, or as a specimen plant in a stand alone pot in a bright window or balcony location where its coral edging on each leaf will shine. As it grows larger, it will eventually branch out to take on a denser shrub like habit.
Kalanchoe by Marnier can tolerate bright light and likes to be shielded from strong direct afternoon sun, which might burn its leaves if it is not introduced to the sun gradually. This can be quite a hardy plant once you find a good watering schedule - try not to water little bits little and often, give it a good drench then let it dry completely before giving it another good drink. This hardy succulent will produce a strong flowering stalk or many tall, bell-shaped, pinkish to coral or red-orange flowers usually in late winter or springtime.

Important Notes
- Natural variation in leaf colour, coral flush intensity, and branching pattern is normal from plant to plant
- The leaves are somewhat brittle and can snap easily, so handle the plant gently, especially while repotting
- Some leaf drop during transit is common for succulents and the plant usually recovers within a week or two
- Never make it sit in full, strong, hot afternoon sun immediately after removing it from the packaging. Gradually allow it to adjust.
- Always prevent watering this plant very much, the pot soil should never become logged, especially in monsoon.
- All parts of this plant are poisonous if they are taken in orally, do not make children and pets reach it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why doesn’t my Kalanchoe Marnieriana get much coral colour on the leaves?
A: The coral to pink blush usually shows in plants receiving lots of light and a bit of slight stress, so if it's in shade or a darker spot you might see a more uniform blue-green colour. Place in a sunnier spot and over time it should show more colour.
Q: How do I water my Kalanchoe?
A: The best way to water Kalanchoe is using the soak-and-dry method – water fully, allow soil to dry completely between waterings, usually every 12-16 days in your climate, although be careful to overwater which can quickly lead to root rot.
Q: Can Kalanchoe Marnieriana be grown indoors?
A: Absolutely – it does very well inside next to a sunny window that provides either direct or indirect sunlight. With poor light, the stems tend to stretch and become “leggy”, so rotate the pot from time to time to ensure even growth.
Q: How fast does this plant grow?
A: This plant is a slow-to-moderate grower. With time, it will develop over time to become larger, will eventually branch and fill in over time and will look more shrubby.
Q: Does this plant require fertiliser?
A: A diluted balanced liquid feed every month in spring and summer would be suitable for healthy growth, but no feeding in winter.
Q: Are Kalanchoe marnieriana plants safe to be around my animals
A: This plant is poisonous and if ingested could make a pet feel ill, vomit or feel lazy or tired. I would keep this plant away from animals and children.
