Kalanchoe Fedtschenkoi
Description
This Kalanchoe fedtschenkoi is a succulent more affectionately called Lavender Scallops due to the lavender blush the blue green leaves will get along the scalloped edges when exposed to adequate sunlight. It belongs to the Crassulaceae family (the same family that the jade plants and echeverias belong to) and is native to Madagascar. A unique feature of Lavender Scallops are the small “babies” that develop along the scalloped edges of the leaves, which may then detach to become self sufficient, causing the plant to reproduce easily after establishment.
A Sunny Windowsill/ Balcony Location Rock gardens or succulent gardens would also be appropriate in mild climates This plant requires a lot of bright light in order to obtain those nice lavendar edges on its leaves without good light, your plant will just be plain green, your plant also needs to lean to find light in too dark a space and will likely begin to get leggy. Some light morning sun, or a good amount of filtered light through out the day will generally do it, but full on midday sun during the height of summer will toast the fleshy leaves.
Lavender Scallops is one of the more beginner-friendly succulent choices if the owner knows the most crucial part of succulent care: let the soil dry out in between waterings. It also offers novice succulent lovers a stress-free method to practice propagation because a leaf from this succulent that has baby plantlets forming on it will frequently just root in nearby soil all by itself. It looks good when paired with other windowsill succulents, on a bright office desk, or it also makes a great gift for an already succulent gardener.

Care at a glance
Aspect
Requirement
Sunlight
Bright light with some direct sun. A window that gets a few hours of morning or filtered sun works well; strong light brings out the pink-lavender leaf edges, while harsh midday sun can scorch the leaves.
Watering
Allow the soil to dry out fully between waterings, then water thoroughly. Cut back further in winter, when the plant needs very little water.
Temperature
Prefers warm conditions, ideally 18°C to 27°C. It is frost-tender, so protect it from cold drafts and never leave it out in freezing temperatures.
Humidity
Average room humidity suits it fine. It does not need misting and prefers drier air over consistently damp conditions.
Repotting
Repot every 2 years or so, or once the plant outgrows its pot, using a fresh well-draining succulent mix.
Growth rate
Fast for a succulent. It spreads readily and produces small plantlets along the leaf edges, which can root and grow into new plants on their own.

Important notes
- Leaf colour and the amount of lavender or pink tinge can vary from plant to plant depending on the light it has been grown under, since this is a live product and not identical to a photograph.
- Shedding a few small leaves or a slightly soft stem upon arrival is to be expected as it needs a few days to adjust to its new environment before really establishing itself.
- Acclimate to plenty of bright sunlight rather than intense midday sun as an unacclimated plant could burn its leaves in direct afternoon sun.
- When kept for a long period in shade, the leaves tend to be plain green, stems will grow stretched; find it a sunnier place for a return of fullness and shape.
- This succulent is not tolerant to overwatering, allowing the soil to dry out completely between watering and watering only occasionally during the winter.
- The Kalanchoe has an internal chemical which can induce illness, serious and potentially fatal in kids and pets. They both must be kept far away and a vet should be on speed dial.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Why are the edges of my leaves not purple/pink any longer, just turning solid green?
A: Whether or not the leaves are rimmed with purple-pink depends on the light they receive. When kept too dark, the rim disappears and stems will often begin to reach. Put in a brighter location or window (some direct or filtered sun for a few hours is sufficient), and the rims should return to the new growth.
Q: How do I water this plant?
A: Wait until the soil is thoroughly dry, then water and drain. It stores water in its leaves, so it is more likely to suffer from too much water than not enough, and this goes for winter care too.
Q: Can I keep this plant inside year-round?
A: Yes, with adequate bright window light and a few hours of sun either direct or filtered each day. This is not a low-light plant, so a dark space eventually causes stretched weak growth with washed-out leaves.
Q: How much direct sun is acceptable?
A: It does well with lots of light and some morning direct sun or filtered sun during harsh mid day sun exposure in the summer months.
Q: What are those tiny growths along the edge of the leaves and how fast do they grow?
A: These are called plantlets. It’s naturally forming along the serrated leaf edges, and while it’s a quick grower for a succulent, a plant let with its’ new growths will even develop roots if the leaves just fell onto a moist surface of the soil.
Q: Are there any plants that are dangerous for pets to be around?
A: No, Kalanchoe fedtschenkoi has toxic elements which could result in vomiting, diarrhea or cardiac symptoms if they are consumed by your pets so keep the plant away from dogs, cats and any pets if ingested seek the help of your vet right away.
