Euphorbia Red Flowering Plant ( Euphorbia milii )
Description
This Red Flowering Euphorbia is also known as the Euphorbia milii. It is one of the many shrubby succulents that tolerates drought and has a thorny stem producing big red flowers nearly all year round. It’s one in every of the many well-known flowering crops for homes in India. This plant is in the household Euphorbiaceae and it grows within the African continent of Madagascar. Those vibrant crimson parts in the plant we name flowers are essentially altered leaves referred to as bracts that cowl the tiny white flowers that sit on the inner section of the rose red petals.
Anyone visiting India would know Euphorbia milii, also called ‘crown of thorns’, for it is commonly found in household gardens, along streets, and on temple premises. The plant loves hot, dry weather and is quite tolerant of the hot Indian summer sun. Its thick, fleshy stem stores a lot of water, making it quite water efficient once established and does not demand frequent watering. This plant is also much preferred because in spite of its thick, thorny stem that is lined with numerous sharp spines, it offers abundant bloom with very little care. Its oval green leaves offset and highlight the scarlet blooms.
The Euphorbia Red Flowering Plant we send you is already about to start new active growth and produce/ready to produce its first flush of braces packed in a 3″ nursing pot or bare-rooted. It can be easily used in balcony gardens, sun loving windowsill gardening, outdoor beds, terrace garden or even on sunny office desk and window ledge – provided it gets direct sunlight of at least 4-5 hours everyday, as the young Euphorbias do not grow much larger in height.
Key Features
- Its vivid red bracts almost throughout the year make it one of the longest-blooming plant for Indian gardens.

- Low maintenance when grown - rarely needs to be pruned and doesn't really need feeding or specific attention.
- Beautifully deep green leaves contrast strongly with bright red bracts through all seasons of the year
- Sturdy and long-lived - survives years in the outdoors with minimum fuss.

Important Notes
- Euphorbia milii plant has thick milky white latex like sap in its stems and leaves which is poisonous and causes skin irritation, eye irritation and is bad to eat. Hence wear gloves whenever you touch this plant in any way (pruning, repotting) etc. Wash hands after touch.
- Ensure this plant remains well away from the reach of small children and animals; all plant parts are toxic when eaten.
- The plant will come with sharp thorns on its stems and require extremely careful handling when unpacking or repotting using heavy gardening gloves.
- Some leaf drop in transit can be expected, especially from the low stem, but once it receives adequate sunlight and has adjusted it will begin to put on new leaves and flowers within a few weeks.
- Don't water too oftenEuphorbia milii must surely be the plant people tend to overwater. Only water once the compost has dried out totally.
- In Indian winters you’ll also need to lower the watering, as the plant drinks very little water when the weather is cool.excess water during cold season can cause the plant’s roots to rot.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. My euphorbia red flowering plant won’t bloom, what do I do?
A. Usually, it means not enough light. Euphorbia milii requires a good 4-6 hours of direct sun per day in order to produce reliable flowers. If your plant’s leaves are green, but there aren't many or any bracts (red) then it likely lacks sunlight. Give it the sunniest window you have. A south or west facing balcony or window is best. Don't water too often as this inhibits flowering. It generally will start to bloom within a few weeks once you start giving it sun and proper wet and dry watering cycle.
Q: White sap on the stem came in contact with my skin. What should I do?
A: Immediately wash with soap and water the area where it came in contact. The plant produces an irritant, Milky sap with Eu. Millii in eyes or on skin. If it enters into your eyes Rinse for a number of minutes and see your doctor, if it still burns or gets irritated. Do not touch eyes, face, mouth after handling the plant and keep gloves on when you trim it or re-pot it . Keep children & pets from it too.
Q: How often should I water the Euphorbia Red Flowering Plant?
A: Water only when the soil is completely dry. This typically happens once in 10-14 days in summer. If it's monsoon season, the rainfall may be sufficient; and you might not even need to water it as long as it's in a well-drained pot. In winter, once in 3-4 weeks would be enough. This plant holds water in its thick stem, so dry spells are usually not an issue for Euphorbia plants; consistently soggy soil on the other hand causes root rot and kills the plants most effectively.
Q: Can I keep the Euphorbia Red Flowering Plant indoors?
A: Yes, you can keep it indoors, but only in a location that receives lots of bright, direct sunlight for a few hours each day – as with a south-facing windowsill, or a glass-sided balcony. If there’s not enough light indoors the plant quickly stops flowering and starts to shed leaves. If your interior environment doesn’t have enough bright light, better plant this one out of the doors either out of the balcony or the garden, where there’s plenty of sunlight for this plant.
Q: Should I prune the Euphorbia Red Flowering Plant?
A: It isn’t necessary to prune but it will promote branching and more stems to get you more flowers. When pruning, always use gloves that are thick, as this Euphorbia has very acrid white sap, and always use sharp scissors or secateurs. Cut your stem right at a leaf-joint or node. If the sap is problematic, you can dab the cut-end with a cloth or even leave the cut to air dry for a few minutes. A light prune after flowering should be done whenever you get a flowering surge, or you want your plant to be less gangly.
Q: Can the Euphorbia Red Flowering Plant tolerate Indian summer heat?
A: Yes, it thrives with no issue. Euphorbia milii is one of the few plants that tolerates Indian summers better than more sensitive flowers. Originally from a hot desert climate this Euphorbia plant loves temperatures over 100F so long as it is not sitting in soggy soil.In fact, with all the sun, dry heat, and warm nights typical of an Indian summer this plant actually feels at home. Just be sure to plant in a freely draining pot and don’t water during the hottest part of the day.
