Sedum praealtum, commonly known as Balsam, is a succulent plant native to semidesert regions. This species is characterized by its fleshy, spatulated leaves that grow in whorls and can reach heights of 30 to 60 cm. The plant produces terminal, branched inflorescences adorned with numerous yellow flowers, typically blooming in autumn and winter.
Medicinal Uses:
Traditionally, Sedum praealtum has been utilized for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, particularly in treating sore and swollen eyes. It has also been used in folk medicine for ulcer treatments and general inflammatory issues. Recent studies have indicated its antimicrobial potential against certain bacteria and its cytotoxic effects, though it lacks effective antimycobacterial action.
Care Requirements:
For optimal growth, Sedum praealtum prefers well-draining soil and full sun exposure, making it suitable for rock gardens or as a drought-resistant ornamental plant. Regular watering should be avoided to prevent root rot, aligning with its native arid habitat.
