Echeveria Colorata E.Walther
Description
Echeveria Colorata “Painted Echeveria” is a Mexican native succulently forming an enormous, outwardly arching rosette of heavy, lanceolate leaves with pale yellow-green to whitsh color which taper to a fine point in an extreme point at the tip of each leaf, rimmed with a very narrow, more vibrant red margin if exposed to consistent strong light. Echeveria Colorata is among the few Echeverias of smaller size that will ultimately develop into a very substantial rosette.
Bright light, so strong light will result in a better coloring of this Echeveria and more compact form. A south-facing windowsill, sunny balcony or an outdoor patio in mild climates will prove most popular as this plant likes to bask in several hours of light in a day, but also does fairly well in bright locations indoors with at least some direct sun. Considering Echeveria Colorata's adult size, it's ideal as a single focal feature that will fill in over time; its pale, painterly palette will pop against dark green other succulents.
The Echeveria Colorata produces a fairly low-water resistant plant which has some drought tolerance. Since this plant needs just a basic, no fuss amount of care once lighting conditions are adequate, this can be managed in any garden. Older versions often push out arched flower stalks lined with beautifully shaped bright pink bells toward the end of the summer and on into the late spring, giving a gardener several seasons of yearlong delight.

Important Notes
- Each plant is a living thing, so natural variation in rosette size, leaf shape, and edge colouring is normal
- This particular one is the large growth Colorata, and will fill out its lovely spreading habit in good time and with continued care
- Red edge colouring depends on light exposure; plants kept in lower light will look plainer with less contrast
- Small damage or minor leaf drop in transit for your succulent is standard, and it generally will recover within 2 weeks
- Be careful with harsh, afternoon sun immediately after opening – let it acclimate slowly
- Make sure to water at the base and not have water collect on the rosette, or it might rot
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: My Echeveria Colorata isn’t displaying very many red borders. Why?
A: Red edges on this species require a lot of light exposure, and consistently too, and otherwise they retain more of a washed-out pale green leaf without a lot of distinction. Moving the plant to a sunnier location, (most will want to be in at least several hours of direct sun) will strengthen red color over the next few weeks.
Q: Should I water this much?
A: Water it deeply and let the soil dry completely before watering it again. This may be every 10 to 14 days in the growing season and even less often in winter, depending on the environment and container size. It’s best always to test for dryness first instead of sticking to an exact schedule.
Q: Is It Possible to Keep Echeveria Colorata Indoors?
A: Yes, it is, provided that it can receive a number of hours of full sun, or bright indirect sunlight from a south-facing window daily. It also does exceedingly well when allowed to sit out on a balcony or patio in good weather, as light is usually more abundant.
Q: How fast does this plant grow? And how large will it grow?
A: Echeveria Colorata grows fairly slowly, and at its mature stage will grow to be one of the larger rosettes many echeverias tend to have. They can sometimes be several inches in diameter as a mature succulent. The young rosette you are getting will expand and grow over time.
Q: When should I repot it?
A: Usually, it only needs to be repotted every 2-3 years, preferably in spring/summer when the plant's growing vigorously. Only pick slightly wider than the plant container. It can grow even larger eventually.
Q: Are Echeveria Coloratas harmful to cats/dogs?
A: Luckily, all Echeverias are non-toxic to both dogs and cats. However, as always with any plant, it’s best to keep anything you don’t want a pet to chew on somewhere out of their reach – and if you are ever concerned, check in with a vet.
