Sempervivum arachnoideum, commonly known as Cobweb Houseleek, is a hardy succulent that is well-loved for its unique appearance and resilience. This plant features rosettes covered in fine, web-like hairs, giving it a distinctive cobweb-like look. It is native to the mountainous regions of Europe and is known for its ability to thrive in various environments.

Care Requirements

Light Needs:
Sempervivum arachnoideum prefers full sun to partial shade. It thrives best when exposed to at least 6 hours of sunlight daily. In hotter climates, providing some afternoon shade can help prevent leaf scorch.

Watering:
This succulent follows the typical watering regimen of "soak and dry." Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During the growing season (spring to fall), it is advisable to water deeply about once a week, while in winter, reduce watering to every three to four weeks as the plant enters dormancy.

Soil Requirements:
A well-draining soil mix is crucial for Sempervivum arachnoideum. It can adapt to various soil types, including sandy and rocky soils, which mimic its natural habitat.

Temperature and Hardiness:
This plant is cold-hardy and can tolerate temperatures as low as -29°C (-20°F), making it suitable for USDA hardiness zones 4 to 8. It is ideal for outdoor gardens but can also be grown indoors if provided with adequate light.

Growth Characteristics

Sempervivum arachnoideum produces numerous offsets, often referred to as "chicks," from the main rosette (the "hen"). These offsets can be easily propagated by gently removing them from the mother plant and allowing them to dry for a day or two before planting in well-draining soil.

Fertilization

Fertilization is generally not necessary for Sempervivum arachnoideum since it thrives in nutrient-poor soils. However, if desired, a balanced fertilizer can be applied at half-strength once a month during the growing season.

Pests and Diseases

This succulent is relatively pest-resistant but may occasionally attract mealybugs or aphids. Regular monitoring and prompt treatment with insecticidal soap can help manage any infestations. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensuring proper drainage is essential

Sempervivum arachnoideum is an attractive and low-maintenance succulent that adds beauty to gardens and indoor spaces alike. With its unique cobweb-like appearance and minimal care requirements, it is an excellent choice for both novice and experienced gardeners.
