Bottle Fern (Fishbone Fern — Nephrolepis cordifolia)
Product Description
One of the most common house plants, the Bottle Fern has always been a bit of a staple amongst beginners and it’s not hard to see why. Known as 'Nephrolepis cordifolia' to botanists this unassuming houseplant has various common names including ladder fern, fishbone fern and tuber sword fern on account of its neatly arranged series of long, slender fronds that create an attractive, almost ladder-like pattern. This delicate looking fern arcs outwards from the center to produce a gentle, layered display which makes it an excellent filling greenery for many spots around the home.
Relatively easy to care for, this type of fern can tolerate most average domestic conditions and this has allowed it to develop into a fantastic choice for a first ever houseplant. It enjoys regular watering and plenty of light, preferably indirect but as long as its position gets some light, it won’t be long to get settled into the area, as with many ferns it can take a little time for them to establish. With an underground network of ‘tubers’ on the roots which provide a small source of stored moisture if watering has been missed, the Bottle Fern is suitable for living room, office or bathroom window sill, or any balcony space with indirect light. Unlike its flower-forming houseplant cousins, Bottle Ferns don’t bloom, relying on spores for reproduction and will focus all of its energy on creating gorgeous foliage – as it should.
The overlapping nature of its fronds will compliment many other foliage styles and plant companions and will even compliment plants with wider leaves.
It’s a great way to incorporate an easy-care splash of green into any environment and can work at varying positions if provided with appropriate conditions.

Important Notes
- As a real, living plant each sapling can have a slightly different frond length, fullness, and overall appearance.
- A little brown on the frond tip, or leaf loss is normal when the plant is delivered; the leaves will recover quickly in their new setting.
- Do not expose the plant to bright, direct sunlight – the fine, soft fronds will burn and discolor in this kind of sun exposure.
- Be sure to keep the plant well-watered because it does not like to dry out for extended periods – check the soil often, particularly during the hotter months.
- Low humidity will result in dry frond tips – mist occasionally in dry weather.
- As the pace of the plants slows in winter months, they do require less frequent watering.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why are my fern fronds turning brown on the tips?
A: Browning on fern fronds typically occurs from humidity levels or water levels. Spritz leaves whenever humidity is lacking-on hotter days-and never let the soil dry out completely before watering. Keep your pot a safe distance from air conditioners and vents and radiators or other heat vents.
Q:How often does this need watering?
A: This fern thrives in steadily damp (though not soaking wet) soil. See by squeezing the top 1-2 inches of soil: water when it starts to turn crumbly, don’t wait till it becomes totally bone dry. In the scorching summer months watering perhaps once in 2-3 days may be the answer, but not so for the relatively milder summer months of India and monsoon.
Q: Will this fern be ok indoors without much direct light?
A: This plant tolerates shade quite well however, will have slower growth, the leaves will not be as lush as if it was in an indirect sunlight source. Plant the fern in a location nearby the window that will receive filtered light.
Q: What is the growth rate and final size of this plant?
A: This plant has a moderate growth rate. Indoor specimens will eventually reach a relatively small size of one or two feet over time, the size of the plant will correlate with the pot size. This plant gradually will fill up with time as new leaves will emerge at its base.
Q: When should I repot it?
A: Move into a larger pot every 1-2 years or sooner if the roots become visible tightly coiled round the bottom of the base, growing out of the drainage holes. When you see that, pot up into the next larger pot size with a well draining, but compost that still retains moisture.
Q: Does this plant need fertiliser?
A: Light feeding throughout the growing season does it no harm. A balanced, water-soluble fertiliser once every few weeks in spring and summer should do the trick – then cut back to none, or once a month in winter.
