Description

Syngonium Starlite (Syngonium podophyllum 'Starlite')

Description

Syngonium Starlite Beautiful houseplant with delicate small arrowhead leaves that are green with cream variegation. A part of the aroid plant family (Syngonium podophyllum) native to Central and South America, and often incorrectly found listed under ‘Zebrina’. These plants have lacelike patterns as compared to those hybrids which have a coarseness in the variegation pattern.

A younger, compact, bunched growth of this plant makes it very practical in a 3 inch starting pot size. It is a fitting houseplant, which is going to grow well on a desk, in a corner of a small balcony, or on a windowsill. The Syngonium Starlite houseplant may develop trailing vines in maturity; however, a moss pole or other support is required for such growth style. In the absence of any supports, this houseplant naturally cascades as a vine from hanging planters or a shelf placed above ground level.

In comparison with some plants, Syngonium Starlite is more forgiving when provided with adequate indoor lighting. An east-facing or north-facing window with little sunlight is the ideal choice or can be several inches further away from a window that receives more light. It also fares quite well in the fairly consistent temperatures that are common in most homes or office environments compared to fluctuating external environments.

Key Features

  • Small arrowhead leaves with pale green and cream variegation
  • Starts bushy and compact, becoming a trailing vine as it grows
  • Enjoys low to medium indoor light – high light increases the variegation
  • Enjoys moderate watering, allowing the soil surface to dry between watering
  • Prefers smaller indoor spaces on desk and tabletops
  • Good for growing on a moss pole or allowing to fall from a hanging plant
  • An easier plant choice for indoor beginners
  • Compact plant, perfect for giving as a gift or grouping together with others.

Important Notes

  • All our plants are living beings, so minor variations to the size, shape and variegation on the leaves can occur from the pictures above.
  • You will see some slight or initial leaf drop is normal upon arrival as a reaction to shipping and these plants recover within 1-2 weeks.
  • Prevent its leaves from becoming damaged by strong, direct sunlight for its first two days.
  • Your plants' growth rate can reduce during winter months – this is a normal occurrence during a time of less light.
  • The plant should be kept out of reach of pets and young children, Syngonium is not considered toxic but it’s not intended for consumption.
  • Do not re-pot or fertilise a plant for at least a week, a settlement in a period of this nature is recommended for the plant to acclimatise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My Syngonium Starlite has yellow leaves. What can cause this?

A: Usually, yellowing is the result of overwatering, or a pot that lacks drainage. Ensure the first 1-2” of soil is dry before watering again, and always water until it drains out the bottom of the pot. The odd old yellow leaf is also completely natural.

Q: How often do I need to water it?

A: I don’t stick to a rigid schedule as it depends a lot on indoor climate, but as a rough guide – Water when the first 1” of soil feels dry to the touch, water thoroughly. Drain the pot before placing the plant back on the tray to catch excess. Never water to a strict schedule, especially when the soil still feels moist.

Q: Can we keep syngonium Starlite plants inside our home in the summer and winter seasons ?

A: Yes, in our homes these are grown as indoor plants in India and do best in most indoor temperatures. Make sure they are kept from direct blast of air conditioners and away from the cold droughts near windows or doors in winter.

Q: do these plants love to get direct sunlight?

A:No . The strong sunlight, especially the afternoon sunlight is very effective to cause burn marks to the leaves of the plant. So they can enjoy living near the window where plenty of light reaches through a net curtain or just a few feet away from the window.

Q: How quickly does Syngonium Starlite grow and is support necessary?

A: It is a moderate growers in ideal conditions and while it is not necessary it will develop larger leaves if provided with support, like a moss pole. Otherwise it will simply trail.

Q: When do I need to re-pot and does it need to be fed often?

A: re-pot when the roots have fill the current pot- around 1-2 years, moving up to the next pot size, this shouldn’t happen to new plants immediately when delivered. Fertilizer is not necessary until established, then after that use a balanced liquid in the spring and summer growing months to encourage new growth.
