Spathiphyllum Cannifollium Netpot
Spathiphyllum cannifolium, commonly known as the Canoe Plant or Peace Lily, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Araceae family. This species is characterized by its large, glossy, dark green leaves that can grow up to 25 inches long and 10 inches wide. The plant produces elegant white spathes that surround a spadix, creating a striking floral display.
Key Features:
- Growth Habit: Typically reaches heights of 1 to 3 feet, with a rosette formation of leaves emerging directly from a low-lying stem.
- Flowers: The inflorescence consists of a white or greenish-white spathe that can be 10 to 30 cm long, surrounding a shorter spadix covered in flowers.
Care Requirements:
- Light: Thrives in low to moderate light conditions; it does not require direct sunlight and can tolerate shade.
- Watering: Water approximately once a week, allowing the soil to remain moist but not soggy. It’s important to avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
- Soil: Prefers well-draining potting soil rich in organic matter.
- Temperature and Humidity: Enjoys warm temperatures (70°F to 90°F) and higher humidity levels, making it suitable for indoor environments.
Toxicity:
While Spathiphyllum cannifolium is popular as a houseplant due to its beauty and air-purifying qualities, it contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can be mildly toxic if ingested in large quantities. Symptoms of ingestion may include burning sensations in the mouth and throat, excessive drooling, and difficulty swallowing. This versatile plant is often used in homes and offices for its aesthetic appeal and ease of care, making it an excellent choice for indoor gardening.
