Pink Syngonium Plant (Syngonium podophyllum)
Description
The Pink Syngonium Plant is a most handsome plant with pale pink and green variegated leaves. The botanical name for the plant is the Syngonium podophyllum but is often called an Arrowhead plant, the young leaves can take on the appearance of an arrowhead. Although the shape of the leaves of this plant will vary as it ages the colour of the leaves will remain the star, always a lovely pink and green mixture.
This Pink Syngonium is a vining houseplant that grows in an upright and bushy habit when young, and in fact this is when most are sold at small size. However when the plant matures and grows it will trail from wherever it is kept if given a small support to cling to such as a small stick or moss pole. Because of its vining habit it can look good, kept compact by being cut back when needed or be hung in an array on a high shelf where its leaves can hang over slightly.
Pink Syngonium is extremely suitable for the inside house, in a living room, bedroom, on a desk in a study room or even on a desk in a study room at work, it doesn't require bright direct light, so is suitable for homes and apartments that only have light from a window or curtains. This is a popular choice for many beginner houseplant keepers due to it tolerating slight neglect and adjusting to normal room temperatures easily.
The plant arrives either in a simple pot or a bare-rooted form, both of which are extremely portable and will find their way to any spot in the room. Besides its aesthetic contribution to a room, Syngonium is valued due to its size if it's potted in a small pot. Therefore, it would be a wise pick for those who don't have much space in their rooms or offices. It fits as a tabletop plant in houses and as a desk plant in the office too since it will hardly need attention
Key features
- Pink and green coloring in the leaves. The colors intensify with the age of the plant.
- Is a climbing plant, which may be encouraged to grow bushy or to trail with minimal support.
- A great plant for the indoor home with moderate, indirect light-like near an east- or west-facing window with some diffused light.
- The species thrives in normal indoor room temperatures, requiring no specific environmental conditions.
- Since its growth is slow and contained within a pot, it works well on desks, shelves and bedside tables.
- Simple watering needs once the basic routine is understood
- Comes in a ready-to-display pot, so no immediate repotting is required
- A good small gift option for plant lovers who enjoy colourful foliage plants
Care at a glance
|
Sunlight |
Moderate, indirect light is best. Hot, direct sun may fade or burn the color. |
|
Watering |
Water when the top layer of soil is dry to touch. Do not leave the pot in stagnant water. |
|
Temperature |
Most happiest between 18C and 29C. Avoid cold draughts and quick changes in temperature. |
|
Humidity |
Thrives in medium-high humidity but is fine with normal house humidity levels which most Indian homes maintain. |
|
Repotting |
You'll need to repot when the roots have filled the pot or the plant is slowing down its growth. Generally do this about once a year, but into a slightly larger pot. |
|
Growth rate |
Medium growing. It produces a vine which can be cut back to produce a neat, bushy plant. |

Important notes
- As every plant is a living organism, differences in leaf color and size and the pink patterns compared to the picture can be expected.
- Plants may shed some leaves or wilt a little due to being transported. These symptoms are usually temporary and the plant recovers within 7 days of regular care.
- Protect from bright and direct sun; strong light can bleach the pink colouring, and burn the leaves.
- The sap of this plant can irritate the skin if touched, but is not poisonous if chewed or ingested; therefore avoid proximity of young children and pets, and wash hands after cutting.
- It is likely to grow slower in cooler times of the year, and quicker in warmer.
- If trained to grow as a trailing or climbing plant, a regular prune will keep it compact and bushy.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Why are the leaves of my Pink Syngonium turning pale or losing their pink colour?
A: This normally happens when there is not enough light reaching the plant. Move your plant closer to a brightly lit window with filtered or indirect light, as good light is necessary to maintain good pink coloring on the leaves.
Q: How often should I water this plant?
A: No definite days as it really varies with the heat and humidity in your house. Stick your finger into the soil, about an inch and only water when it feels dry. Don't allow the pot to sit in excess water that has accumulated in the tray.
Q: Can I keep this plant indoors all the time?
A: Pink Syngonium is primarily an indoor houseplant; it's content in bright rooms but prefers light that has been diffused by a window with a sheer curtain to shield it from harsh rays. It is very tolerant to normal room temperatures.
Q: Does this plant need direct sunlight?
A: No. The strong direct sun will bleach the pink and scald the leaves. Place it in bright indirect light, for instance, on the opposite side of a window that gets plenty of light.
Q: Is this plant safe to keep around pets and children?
A: The sap produced by syngonium is mildly irritating if bitten on or come into contact with the skin. This plant should be kept out of reach of young children and animals and care should be taken when pruning or handling the plant, in that hands should be washed.
Q: When should I repot my Pink Syngonium?
A: About once a year, when the plant's growth has noticeably slowed or when you see the roots beginning to emerge from the drainage hole, the plant will need to be repotted into a pot just one size larger than the current one and using a potting mix that drains well.
