Sedum rubrotinctum 'Aurora', commonly referred to as Pink Jelly Bean, is a vibrant succulent known for its colorful, jelly bean-shaped leaves that exhibit a beautiful blend of green and pink hues. This cultivar is a part of the Sedum family, which includes many popular succulents prized for their unique aesthetics and low maintenance requirements.
Care Requirements
Light Needs:
Sedum rubrotinctum 'Aurora' thrives in bright, indirect sunlight and can also tolerate full sunlight. It requires at least 4 to 6 hours of sunlight daily to maintain its vibrant colors and compact growth habit. However, it’s important to protect the plant from intense, direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.
Watering:
As a succulent, this plant has low water requirements. It is crucial to allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During the active growing season (spring and summer), water thoroughly and wait until the soil is dry before watering again. In winter, reduce watering frequency as the plant becomes less active.
Humidity and Temperature:
Sedum rubrotinctum 'Aurora' prefers average room humidity (around 40% or lower). It thrives in temperatures between 65°F and 80°F (18°C to 27°C). If moved outdoors during warmer months, it can handle heat well but should be brought indoors if nighttime temperatures drop below 50°F (10°C).
Soil Requirements:
A well-draining soil mix is essential for this succulent. A cactus potting mix or sandy soil works well to ensure proper drainage and prevent root rot.
Growth Characteristics
Sedum rubrotinctum 'Aurora' typically grows up to 8 inches (20 cm) tall and can spread outwards as it matures. Its unique leaves can turn a lovely pink at the tips when exposed to more sunlight, enhancing its visual appeal. The plant will produce trailing stems that can be displayed beautifully in hanging baskets or containers
Fertilization
This succulent does not require frequent fertilization. However, during the growing season, you can feed it with a diluted balanced fertilizer every two to three months to promote healthy growth.
Propagation
Propagation is easy with Sedum rubrotinctum 'Aurora'. You can propagate it from leaves or stem cuttings. Allow cuttings to dry for a day or two before placing them in moist potting medium; they will root readily within a few weeks.
Common Problems
- Overwatering: Symptoms include yellowing leaves and mushy stems. Ensure the soil dries out completely between waterings.
- Sunburn: Look for brown or black spots on leaves, indicating too much direct sunlight. Move the plant to a location with indirect light.
- Pests: Watch for mealybugs or aphids; treat infestations with insecticidal soap
Sedum rubrotinctum 'Aurora' is an attractive and low-maintenance succulent that adds color and charm to any indoor or outdoor space. With proper care regarding light, watering, and occasional fertilization, it can thrive beautifully and become a delightful part of your plant collection.
