• Slower growth is also natural during winter – it doesn’t indicate the plant is unhealthy.

Q: What is happening with the leaves on my Philodendron Paraiso Verde. They are yellowing? 

A: Usually overwatering or the plant is sitting in water causing leaves to yellow. Be sure your pot drains well. Only water when the top one or two inches of soil feels dry. If a couple of older leaves turn yellow a few times as the plant ages, there is no problem.

Q: How often should I water it? 

A: Watering is based not on the clock but on ambient temperature, humidity and lighting where your home is. The general guide for most house plants is to test the soil every few days and water when top 1-2” feels dry. They will require more water in the warm summer and less in the cool winter months.

A: No, not to thrive. Too much sun can scorch its leaves. Good leaf color and steady growth require good bright light, not direct sun.

A: This is another that tends to take a while to get going when the weather is cool and the light levels aren’t really strong, but if brought into your home for the Spring and Summer months and given ideal light conditions you will see growth begin to increase more like a normal faster growing philodendron would.

Q: When do I need to repot this and do I have to use fertiliser?

A: You'll probably want to repot about once every 1 or 2 years, but you might also notice that you need to do this earlier when roots are beginning to come out of the drainage hole or are growing tightly around inside the pot. You can also fertilise with a diluted and balanced liquid fertiliser, once every 4 or 6 weeks from spring through summer, but this is not essential.
