Euphorbia tirucalli, commonly known as pencil cactus or milk bush, is a succulent shrub native to semi-arid regions of Africa and parts of India. This plant is characterized by its cylindrical, pencil-thick stems that can grow up to 30 feet tall, forming bushy masses with a striking appearance. The stems are smooth and green, turning yellow in summer and red in winter, while the plant produces small yellow flowers in cyathia at the tips of its branches.
Care Requirements:
- Light: Prefers full sun and well-draining soil; ideal for bright indoor locations or outdoor gardens in warm climates.
- Watering: Requires infrequent watering; allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot.
- Soil: Thrives in sandy, well-draining soil.
Toxicity:
Euphorbia tirucalli contains a milky, toxic latex that can cause skin irritation and temporary blindness if it comes into contact with eyes. It is essential to handle this plant with care, wearing gloves and protective eyewear.
Uses:
This resilient plant is often used for hedging and landscaping due to its drought tolerance. Additionally, its latex has been investigated for potential medicinal properties, although it is primarily known for its toxicity.
